INCI Ingredient Education
Understanding cosmetic ingredients and why transparency matters
What is INCI?
INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) is the global standardized naming system for cosmetic ingredients. It's designed to provide transparency and help consumers understand what's in their skincare products.
How to Read an INCI List
Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration. The first 5 ingredients typically comprise 80% of the formula. Water (Aqua) is usually listed first, followed by actives and then preservatives.
Common Korean Beauty Ingredients
Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate)
A humectant that holds water in the skin, providing hydration and plumping effects. K-beauty often uses multiple molecular weights for layered hydration.
Niacinamide
Vitamin B3 derivative that reduces inflammation, regulates sebum, and strengthens the skin barrier. Beloved in K-beauty for its efficacy and gentle profile.
Peptides
Short chains of amino acids that support collagen production and skin firmness. Often derived from plant sources in K-beauty formulations.
Centella Asiatica (Cica)
Traditional Korean botanical extract with skin-soothing and barrier-repair properties. Trending in calming and post-procedure skincare.
Snail Mucin (Helix Aspersa Secretion Filtrate)
Natural secretion rich in glycoproteins and hyaluronic acid. Provides hydration and supports skin resilience. A K-beauty staple.
Reading Between the Lines
Just because an ingredient is on the INCI list doesn't mean it's present in meaningful amounts. Look for positioning in the list — actives placed higher typically have better efficacy. Also check for supporting ingredients that enhance absorption or stability.
Why We Prioritize INCI Transparency
At InciKorea, we believe transparency builds trust. Every CLUNA product provides a complete INCI list, detailed efficacy data, and honest discussion of what each ingredient does. No mystery actives. No proprietary blends hiding weak concentrations. Just clean, ingredient-forward skincare.
